Echinopsis ‘Danse Macabre’ (1403-21). Flower to nearly 4-1/2 inches (10-1/2 cm) across. Inner petals rather small, ruffled, strikingly bicolored dark magenta to purple and yellow to bright orange with orange midrib; outer petals tending to be paler than inners. Outer stamens in narrow ring; all anthers fluffy, well-developed, filaments attractive, moderately light orange. Throat-circle white. Stem globular, to 2-3/4 inches (7 cm) in diameter; central spines to 1/2 inch (13 mm) long.

The 'Danse Macabre' flower really isn’t macabre, being more gaudy than anything else. Somehow, though, the name, ‘Danse Macabre’, as in the symphonic poem by Camille Saint-Saëns, came into my mind. And who knows, if you concentrate while looking closely at the flower, you just might faintly hear the skeletons’ bones clinking as they dance in rhythm to the music…
